Postdoctoral Fellow to Study Exosomes in Neurodegenerative Disease

We are seeking a highly motivated individual for a postdoctoral scholar position in the Department of Neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. We are a disease-oriented research lab focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate neurodegeneration and neuroprotection in HIV-Assocaited Neurocognitive Disorders. The laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach that includes clinical tissues/samples, primary tissue culture, molecular reconfiguration, transgenic, knock-out, knock-in mice, biochemical, biophysical, in vitro and in vivo imaging approaches to identify and manipulate signal transduction pathways associated with neurodegenerative processes. The position currently available is to study the biogenesis, composition, structure and function of exosomes and microparticles in the central nervous system using tissue culture, and small animal model systems of disease and drug abuse. Exosomes and microparticles are nanoparticles containing protein, lipid and miRNA cargo. Very little is currently known about these particles in the central nervous system, and interest is rapidly expanding to understand their biology, how these systems are perturbed by disease and if they can be manipulated in a therapeutic manner. We are particularly interested in understanding roles for exosomes and microparticles in regulating cellular calcium flux, protein trafficking/function, endosomal/lysosomal activity, energy metabolism, plasticity, and survival and how the processes are affected by drugs of abuse (opiate drugs in particular). We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow with not more than 2-3 years postdoctoral training and strong background in neuroscience and signal transduction.
